What is APEDA Registration?

APEDA (Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority) Registration is mandatory for exporters of scheduled agricultural and processed food products, issuing a Registration Cum Membership Certificate (RCMC) needed for export incentives and quality compliance support.

APEDA was established under the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority Act, 1985, to develop and promote the export of scheduled agri and processed food products โ€” setting quality standards, providing financial assistance for infrastructure and packaging, and building overseas market linkages so Indian agri-exporters can compete on quality, not just price.

APEDA's Schedule covers a wide product basket โ€” fresh fruits and vegetables, meat and meat products, dairy products, poultry and egg products, confectionery, biscuits and bakery products, honey and jaggery, cereal preparations, groundnuts, and alcoholic/non-alcoholic beverages, among others. Registration is a one-time RCMC issuance (renewable), and it's typically the first sector-specific registration a food/agri exporter completes after obtaining IEC.

Beyond the mandatory registration itself, APEDA runs several support schemes โ€” including financial assistance for infrastructure development, quality certification, and participation in international trade fairs โ€” that registered exporters can apply into, which is why keeping the RCMC current matters even for businesses that already export regularly.

5

Certificate Issuance

The Registration Cum Membership Certificate is issued, renewable periodically.

Validity & Renewal

APEDA RCMC validity runs from 1 April of the year of issuance to 31 March five years later (so effective validity can be less than a full five years depending on the month of issue), and must be renewed before expiry to continue exporting scheduled products.

Penalty for Non-Compliance

Exporting a scheduled product without a valid RCMC, or continuing to trade on an expired one, can disrupt customs clearance and disqualifies the shipment from APEDA scheme benefits until registration is renewed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which products fall under APEDA's schedule?

APEDA covers a defined list including fruits, vegetables, meat, dairy, cereals, and processed foods โ€” we confirm applicability for your specific product.

Is APEDA registration mandatory or optional?

It's mandatory for exporting any product on APEDA's scheduled list โ€” export shipments of these products generally cannot be processed without a valid RCMC.

Can I apply for APEDA's financial assistance schemes right after registration?

Yes, once registered you become eligible to apply for various APEDA support schemes, though each scheme has its own criteria and application window that we help you track.

What happens if my APEDA RCMC expires?

An expired RCMC can disrupt customs clearance and scheme eligibility for scheduled products, so we recommend filing the renewal well before the five-year validity lapses.

Does APEDA registration cover quality certification too?

Registration itself doesn't certify product quality โ€” that's handled separately through APEDA-recognised labs and certification schemes โ€” but registered exporters get easier access to those quality-development programmes.

Do I need APEDA registration if I only export occasionally?

Yes โ€” the requirement is tied to the product category being exported, not to export frequency or volume, so even a single shipment of a scheduled product needs valid RCMC.
